What is ESTA?

That’s a good question. The ESTA or Electronic System for Travel Authorisation is a programme created by the U.S Homeland Security. The aims of creating the ESTA were to improve processing times for tourists and business persons, from chosen countries.

ESTA has massive benefits for those eligible to apply for it. First and foremost, the cost of the ESTA is $14, as opposed to the standard visa prices, which can cost a lot more.

Furthermore, ESTAs are completed online; therefore there is no need to travel to an embassy for an appointment, like a visa requirement.

Applicants can find out of their ESTA application has been approved by visiting the official site. Once applicants have determined if they have been approved or not, the ESTA will be valid for two years. Of course, if a passport that the ESTA is on expires, then the ESTA will also expire.

Within that time frame, ESTA holders can travel to the USA as many times as they like. They cannot stay within the U.S. for more than 90 days per visit though.

Who is ESTA for?

Those countries include the likes of Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta and 34 others. Also, this programme is for business persons or tourists. Furthermore, those that have a connecting flight involving the U.S., need to apply for an ESTA.

Useful ESTA information

Rejection of an ESTA application means that person must apply for a visa.

Anybody planning on traveling to the USA must have an itinerary with them for the duration of their stay, to prove what they are doing and where they are going.

You are unable to work or study on ESTA. You need a visa for that. Working and or studying when you have an ESTA is strictly prohibited.

It is important to note that even if an ESTA is granted, that does not guarantee entry into the United States.
