In its 16th weekend in Japanese theaters, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train has been dethroned once again, coming in second on both the ticket sales and the box office revenue charts. Gintama: THE FINAL only beat Demon Slayer in ticket sales, not revenue when it dethroned the film in its 13th week. Nevertheless, Mugen Train has been continuing its journey, and over the last week opened in South Korea, giving it yet another stamp on its international rollout.
In Japan, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has exceeded 36.80 billion yen (US$350.7 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of over 26.88 million tickets sold. The anime film dropped to second behind the live-action romantic comedy film Hanataba Mitaina Koi o Shita (Loved Like a Flower Bouquet), which opened in Japan on January 29. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it might be that Demon Slayer has lost its crown to the flowery picture, but time will tell!
Overseas, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train opened in South Korea on January 27 and was the top film on its opening day. In Demon Slayer’s first weekend, though, the Ufotable-produced film came in at second behind Pixar’s Soul. This gives us a glimpse of what may have been around the world if it wasn’t in its current state. Demon Slayer has so far brought in US$1.63 million during its first five days in the Asian nation on the back of 170,419 tickets sold.
This brings the international box office total for Demon Slayer: Mugen Train to over US$385.51 million and is very close to surpassing the total box office takings of Your Name worldwide. Due to currency fluctuations around the world, it may be a few more weeks until Demon Slayer gets there, but it is very close!

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
