Japanese tracking site Oricon is reporting on Monday that Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train has exceeded 4.6 billion yen (US$43.8 million) in the Japanese box office in its first three-day opening weekend, making it the biggest opening for any film in history for the Japanese market, including all foreign and western films released in Japan.

We've been reporting over the weekend that Demon Slayer: Mugen Train had broken all attendance records in Japan and was the first film in history to cross 1,000,000 attendance in one day on Saturday, and then doing again on Sunday, giving it the top three spots for one-day attendance in Japan when including Friday. Oricon reports that the full attendance over the weekend was 3,424,930 people, which more than doubles Frozen II's opening weekend record-breaking attendance last year.

The official Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Twitter account thanking fans for their support

Demon Slayer: Mugen Train brought in 4,623,117,450 yen (US$43.8 million) over the three-day weekend, which easily makes it the biggest three-day opening weekend ever, and the biggest two day-opening weekend in Japanese box office history. Last year's biggest anime film, Weathering with You, opened to 1.5 billion yen (US$15.22 million) over the first three-day weekend, and only reached 4.6 billion yen (US$43.8 million) in the third week of release.

In terms of lifetime grosses, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has already surpassed the lifetime box office grosses of Kiki's Delivery Service, From Up on Poppy Hill, Wolf Children, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly, making it the 36th highest-grossing anime film in Japanese cinemas, just shy of One Piece Film: Strong World's total gross. For more perspective, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has also surpassed the box office takings of all three Sailor Moon films, and both Love Live! films.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train continues to ride through the Japanese box office, smashing record after record. It'll be interesting to see the legs of the film and where it'll end up on the highest-grossing list, but considering the unprecedented nature of the first weekend, and the current state of the world, it'll be hard to predict, though it's safe to say it'll cross the 10 billion yen (US$94.8 million) mark with ease.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba THE MOVIE Mugen Train continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. It is scheduled to be released in the west early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired.
