The real curse would be if Netflix’s Cursed didn’t come back for Season 2

Netflix is nothing if not consistent in bringing viewers great content, and Cursed is no exception. The series, based on Thomas Wheeler and Frank Miller’s book by the same name, takes the traditional Arthurian legend and completely flips it on its head.

Instead of centering the story on the legendary King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable, Cursed is a prequel of sorts, boldly declaring at the very beginning that the Sword of Power chose its queen long before ever choosing Arthur. The 10-episode story that follows is a lesson in reminding us all, again and again, that queens—not kings—are the strongest among us.

Nimue, usually known as the Lady of the Lake who kind of mysteriously flits around and manipulates the magical situation (if she’s mentioned at all), is now the center of the story. And every familiar face she brings with her is seen in a whole new light.

Cursed Season 2 has to happen so we can learn more about our new favorites

While Netflix has yet to announce a Cursed Season 2, the story definitely left off in a place that broke the door wide open for more. Is Nimue really dead? Whether or not she is, did the series of events in Season 1 lead her directly to becoming the “Lady of the Lake” role she’s previously had?

Aside from Nimue’s fate, there’s so much more to explore. This particular version of Arthur isn’t Uther Pendragon’s son—he’s a virtual nobody, wanting so badly to make a name for himself that he attempts to enter a tournament using Nimue’s (stolen) sword. In what feels like a “stay mad” type of move to anyone who disliked seeing a Black Guinivere in BBC’s Merlin, Arthur and Morgana, are both Black.

As actor Devon Terrell told Collider:

But it’s one of those wonderful stories that if you can believe in a magical sword, it doesn’t make sense why you can’t believe in a black Arthur.

Speaking of Morgana, now that she has come into her power, will she take a darker turn that’s more consistent with legends? And can she please, please clash in spectacular fashion with her fellow former Sister, Iris, who left her role at the church to become a murderer instead of a savior?

What better way to use magic dark enough to fall into that traditional gray area than by going after someone walking religious zealots’ path of so-called righteousness?

Another extremely interesting character on Cursed, who could probably have a whole season dedicated to him without even scratching the surface, is The Weeping Monk.

Without giving the ending away, he’s way more than some genocidal maniac who helps the Red Paladins murder the Fey. Learning how he became what he was, as well as how he (hopefully) makes his way to becoming the more well-known version of his character, is a must.

Cursed

He’s certainly the most complex “bad guy” in the series. And anyone who saw Daniel Sharman’s work in Medici shouldn’t be surprised that he brings something truly special (besides the devastating good looks, somehow enhanced by the hood and all that evil-doing) to the role. The man definitely has a talent for playing men with deep layers.

Then, there’s Merlin, often thought of as the most powerful magician of all time. Most folks know him as the friendly, wise old guy in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone or maybe as our favorite goofball-slash-Arthur-bestie in BBC’s Merlin.

Cursed gave us yet another iteration—a drunkard, seen by his own people as a traitor while he was trying to play both sides enough to keep at least some of them safe. But just as Season 1 was coming to a close, we finally saw him show just how powerful he really was, and if the awesome lightning display wasn’t enough to leave you wanting more of him, then what even is the point?
