The Comic Market Preparatory Committee announced today that they have penciled in the long-postponed next Comiket for December 30 and 31, 2021, and will be completely returning to Tokyo Big Sight now that the Tokyo Olympics have gone ahead. The Committee said they held that with a vaccine becoming more widely available and other doujin events from May onwards being held without issues – though this was before the Delta strain – that Comiket can go ahead in December.
This will be the first Comiket since December 2019, with all the others being either cancelled or postponed due to government regulation at the time as cases rose. This will also be the return of Comiket to Tokyo Big Sight after the Olympics split the event between it and an event space a few kilometres away.

In the report on the Comiket website, the committee noted that the event may still find limitations and may still be postponed again in the case of COVID going out of control. At this time, Tokyo is reporting record cases, with Japan as a whole reporting record cases as well, mostly due to the new Delta strain, with vaccines currently in short supply, leaving the younger generations, who are the prime demographic of Comiket, without protections in a State of Emergency that so far doesn’t seem to be working. There will likely be venue restrictions, which will be confirmed at a later stage.

International circles and attendees may be out of luck for now, but for those domestically, applications for circles are being held over the next month, with more details on the website. The committee has noted that if the government expands a State of Emergency close or during Comiket 99, the organization may not be able to refund cicles.
