#CNN and Vice Lead 44th Annual News Emmy Awards

CNN and Vice were among the top winners at the 44th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards on Wednesday, with the former earning 10 Emmys and the latter picking up nine.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) presented the News category winners during a live ceremony at the Palladium Times Square in New York City and streamed live on NATAS’ viewing platform powered by Vimeo, the first of a two-night fete. The Documentary category winners will be announced in a second ceremony held at the Palladium on Thursday.

Scheduled presenters at the Wednesday night News ceremony included The New York Times‘ Yousur Al-Hlou, NBC News’ Ellison Barber, CNN Washington bureau chief Sam Feist, CBS Evening News‘ Norah O’Donnell, ABC News’ John Quiñones, Telemundo’s Johana Suarez, Univision’s Pedro Ultreras and CNN chief international correspondent Clarissa Ward.

Longtime CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer was the previously announced recipient of the lifetime achievement honor during the event, and a portrait of Blitzer drawn by his CNN colleague Jake Tapper was auctioned off for charity.

The recently concluded writers strike was referenced in NATAS president Adam Sharp’s opening remarks. “It’s been a tough summer for our industry. We’re encouraged by the breakthrough in the writers’ strike and hope equitable progress in the SAG-AFTRA strike isn’t far behind,” Sharp said.

He added: “The future of our industry depends on finding an equilibrium between the need for business models to continue adapting to changing viewer habits and the need to ensure that the individual creative and technical talents that are the engine of our industry remain able to make a meaningful and lasting living in it.”

On Thursday, NATAS will gather again at the Palladium to hand out the Documentary Emmy Awards, with Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Koppel set to receive the lifetime achievement award.
