Don Mancini has revealed that when Chucky returns for its second season, the army of possessed dolls will be causing mayhem in a big way.

For many fans of a certain possessed doll, the return of Chucky in his own TV series has been a much appreciated revival for the character that made his original movie debut way back in 1988’s Child’s Play and seemed to have bowed out, in his original form, in 2017’s Cult of Chucky after a total of seven movies, with the franchise being rebooted two years later.

However, creator Don Mancini had other ideas, and a year before the reboot was released there was already talk of a TV series being in development to continue the Chucky franchise with many of its original stars. However, as many of these “in development” shows never actually make to screens, it was not until the show was green lit the following year that fans began to get excited about the return of Brad Dourif as the demon doll.

In the finale of the first season, we were given the daunting prospect of an entire army of Chucky dolls being unleashed on the country, with the soul of Charles Lee Ray possessing every one of them. According to Mancini, the new Army of Chucky dolls will certainly be a feature of the second season, which was renewed a few weeks ago and will be arriving sometime late in 2022. Speaking to Bloody Disgusting, Mancini explained:

“Once you get into your fourth decade in a franchise, it’s trying to forge ahead into unseen, unexplored territory. And the idea of multiple Chucky dolls always appealed to me. First, of course, just as a visual, it’s irresistible, but then conceptually, there are so many things you can do with it. I can’t talk too much about that because I don’t want to spoil fun coming in season two, but insofar as it impacted what we’ve already done in season one. Yeah, it was important that they not have a hive mind because I think it’s more interesting to do this and, again, turn Brad on subtle variations of the Chucky persona. On a lot of fronts, that’s something we were doing a lot of in this season of Chucky, which is dissecting the persona of Chucky and the persona of Charles Lee Ray.”

While the Cult of Chucky created distinct looks for the multiple versions of Chucky, but the Chucky TV series has made the Chucky Army into a group differentiated by their slightly differing personalities, which is likely going to be developed in the coming season.

“We’re thrilled to start pulling the strings on a second season of puppet mayhem with Chucky,” Mancini said at the time of the series’ renewal. “Many thanks to our partners at USA, Syfy and UCP for their incredible support and guidance bringing Chucky to the small screen, bigger than ever. And to the fans, Chucky sends his still-undying thanks, and a message: ‘This isn’t over, not by a long shot. You better watch your backs in 2022!'”

For fans, the renewal of the series when so many others have failed is great news and we will look forward to more Chucky mayhem next year.
