#Chief of staff Meadows says 2020 election will happen on November 3

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Sunday said the November presidential election would go ahead as planned, just days after President Trump floated the idea over concerns about voter fraud.

In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Meadows denied charges that the president was trying to interfere with the election process but echoed his boss’s concern that results could be delayed if an unprecedented number of Americans decide to vote with mail-in ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“He has not looked at delaying any election,” Meadows said.

“What we will do is, if we try to transform this and start mailing in ballots all across the country, all 50 states, what we will see is a delay because they’re just not equipped to handle it,” he continued.

“We’re going to hold an election on November 3 and the president is going to win,” he added.

In a July 30 tweet, Trump suggested the election be delayed “until people can properly, securely and safely vote” while saying mail-in ballots would lead to an “inaccurate and fraudulent” election.

The dates of presidential elections are enshrined in federal law and only Congress is empowered to make any changes.

There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud through mail-in voting and five states rely exclusively on mail-in ballots.

But the president’s tweet caused consternation across the nation and senior Republican leaders were forced to reject the notion.

Trump has been ramping up his attacks on mail-in voting, last week claiming the results of election could take “years.”
