About Hosoda and the making of the film

Director and Screenwriter Mamoru Hosoda is responsible for the idea of this anime film.
The original Japanese title roughly translates to «The Dragon and the Princess with Freckles».
Hosoda is co-founder of Studio Chizu, the film’s animation studio. «BELLE» is the studio’s fourth film.
The film opened in Japanese theaters on July 16, 2021. The premiere took place on July 15, 2021 at the renowned Cannes Film Festival with subsequent 14 minutes of standing applause instead of.
“BELLE” is Hosoda’s first film to be screened at IMAX.
The inspiration for the plot was the Disney animated film “Beauty and the Beast”.
In “BELLE” a virtual world called “U” is shown. Hosoda has already used digital environments in the 2nd «Digimon» film and later again in «Summer Wars».

In Germany at the beginning of December 2021 there were two OmU previews in the IMAX with Hosoda as a guest followed by Q&A.
Of the Theatrical release in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH region) is on 9. June 2022. Some places are showing the film beforehand, such as the Austrian cinema chain Cineplexx, which is showing the film on June 7, 2022 in the OmU.
