#Angel’s Egg OVA To Get 4K Remaster

The 1985 OVA Angel’s Egg is getting a 4K remaster to celebrate its upcoming 40th anniversary.

The remaster will be supervised by director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor the Movie) and has 2025 as its cited completion date.

Angel’s Egg‘s drafts were co-written by Oshii and the OVA’s visual director Yoshitaka Amano (Vampire Hunter D and Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales original character designer, Final Fantasy XI character designer). The 71-minute anime transported viewers to an eerie, fantastical realm where a girl protected a mysterious egg.

A Blu-ray was released in 2013, and was screened by Japan Society NYC in 2022. Another screening was held in 2023 and attended by Amano.

Japan Society NYC describes Angel’s Egg as:

A groundbreaking collaboration between two anime legends that intertwines Mamoru Oshii’s personal reflections on theology, existentialism and evolution with Yoshitaka Amano’s fantastical ink art style, Angel’s Egg remains a rarely screened and hard-to-find cult classic. Taking place in a seemingly quiescent time, two nameless strangers—a girl bearing a mystical egg and a man with a cruciate cane—journey across a primordial realm of decadent ruins, primitive fish and fossilized relics. An allegorical fantasy enriched by symbolism and biblical allusion, Oshii’s beautifully melancholic OVA ruminates on the tragic underpinnings of existence in a world untouched by God.
