#Andrew Bird and Jimbo Mathus Announce New Album These 13, Share New Song “Sweet Oblivion”: Listen

Andrew Bird and Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Jimbo Mathus have announced a new collaborative album. It’s called These 13 and it arrives March 5 (via Thirty Tigers). Below, find the first single, “Sweet Oblivion.”

Bird and Mathus were bandmates in Squirrel Nut Zippers in the late ’90s; the last time Bird was on one of the band’s albums was 2000, with Bedlam Ballroom. But, last year, he linked back up with the band, cropping up on the song “Train on Fire.” Bird’s most recent solo LP, My Finest Work Yet, arrived in 2019.

“Up until meeting Jimbo, all my musical heroes were dead,” Andrew Bird said in a statement. “Jimbo was anything but and just oozed musicality of a kind I thought was extinct. Had I not met Jimbo, who knows, but I think my music would have gone on a much more cerebral, complex trajectory. He is an enigma, a walking contradiction: wild yet refined, worldly yet colloquial. He represents his own branch of the American musical tree. It’s been my dream for years now to make this record with Jimbo. Just guitar, fiddle and our very different voices. I wanted to make sure you can really hear him as if for the first time.”
