#Andres Gimenez makes the Mets’ Opening Day roster

The Mets’ 30-man roster for a 60-game sprint is finalized, with a few surprises in tow.

Perhaps the biggest was 21-year-old shortstop Andres Gimenez, one of the club’s top prospects, making the team out of spring training 2.0 as one of seven bench players available to rookie manager Luis Rojas.

The Mets opted to go with 14 pitchers, which doesn’t include a definite replacement for Marcus Stroman, who went on the injured list Wednesday with a tear in his left calf. Corey Oswalt made the roster and could provide starting depth, with David Peterson and Erasmo Ramirez being left off, though general manager Brodie Van Wagenen was non-committal Thursday on Oswalt stepping into the fifth starter spot.

Wilson Ramos, who recently missed three days of camp to tend to a personal matter, is one of three catchers on the roster, along with Tomas Nido and Rene Rivera. Van Wagenen said Thursday there was a “strong possibility” that Ramos could be in the Opening Day lineup Friday against the Braves.

The final bullpen jobs went to Hunter Strickland, Chasen Shreve and Paul Sewald while veteran infielder Eduardo Nunez won a spot on the bench. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Stephen Gonsalves was designated for assignment.
