AG Barr deploys Bureau of Prisons tactical units to Miami, Washington

Attorney General William Barr ordered the deployment of special tactical units from the federal Bureau of Prisons to respond to protests in Washington, DC, and Miami, an agency spokesperson said.

The units — which make up BOP’s specialized crises management teams — “are highly trained tactical units capable of responding to prison disturbances, and providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies during emergencies,” BOP spokesperson Scott Taylor said in a statement.

The units include disturbance control teams, which are trained to deal with crowd control.

“Per the request of the Attorney General, the BOP has dispatched teams to Miami, Florida, and Washington, D.C.,” Taylor said in the statement.

The agency would not say how many officers they have deployed to the cities, or where those officers typically work.

On Monday, President Trump threatened to mobilize the military to quell protests and destructive uprisings that have gripped the city in the days after George Floyd’s death in police custody.

Trump invoked a law from 1807 to dispatch the military last used in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush to stop the LA riots after the police beating of Rodney King.

“I am mobilizing all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop rioting and looting, to end the destruction,” Trump said Monday, mobilizing the Insurrection Act of 1807.
