#A Random Fact About Eating Pufferfish: Are Blowfish Deadly?

A predator that eats a pufferfish isn’t having a lucky day.

Almost all pufferfish contain a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal to other fish.

This toxin is called tetrodotoxin.

For humans, tetrodotoxin can be deadly. It’s up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide.

In certain types of pufferfish, there is enough toxin to kill 30 adult humans. Plus, there is no known antidote.

The craziest part is: People eat pufferfish in the form of sushi!

In Japan, this meat is considered a delicacy. Fugu (pufferfish) is fairly expensive and only prepared by trained, licensed chefs.

One bad cut means certain hospitalization and sometimes death for the consumer. Most deaths occur when unlicensed persons try to prepare fugu on their own.
