The Yonkers resident, who had “significant underlying medical conditions,” died on Aug. 22, WABC reported.
She was the first county resident to be diagnosed with the illness this year, Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said in a statement.
“The overwhelming majority of people who get the virus do recover, and we generally have only a few cases each year,” Amler noted.
One Westchester resident last year contracted the bug, while there were four cases in 2018, LoHud reported.
Symptoms of the virus resemble the flu or food poisoning and can include high fever, body aches and gastrointestinal issues, the CDC said.
The CDC said the most effective way to prevent the virus is to protect oneself from mosquitoes.
“Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, treat clothing and gear, and take steps to control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors,” the agency said.
