Bill Belichick has added a true patriot to his training camp roster.

Paul Quessenberry, who hasn’t played organized football in more than five years due to a stint in the US Marine Corps, was signed Saturday by the New England Patriots as a converted tight end prospect.

Quessenberry was a defensive end at the Naval Academy, recording 3.5 sacks in 38 games for the Midshipmen through 2014. He had a tryout with the Houston Texans after going undrafted, but was not offered an NFL contract. He joined the Marines shortly thereafter.

Quessenberry’s brothers Scott and David are NFL offensive linemen with the Los Angeles Chargers and Tennessee Titans, respectively. David Quessenberry hauled in a touchdown pass on a Week 2 trick play last season against Indianapolis.

Paul Quessenberry, 28, tried out for the Pats last week as a tight end and he was signed to his first NFL contract. Rob Gronkowski rejoined quarterback Tom Brady in a trade with Tampa Bay after sitting out last season following nine seasons with New England.

The Pats have had eight players opt out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19, and Quessenberry’s chance to make the roster could be aided by the NFL expanding practice squad rosters to 16 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“He was my class at the Academy, we were teammates for five years going back to the prep school. You talk about a special guy that is as tough as they come. It means a lot to me to share this experience,” Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona, a teammate at Navy, told reporters Sunday. “He played defensive end and was always a high-effort, high-energy guy, played on special teams.

“From my experience with him as a teammate, he’s an incredible teammate, incredible person, and like I said, I’m exciting to have him out here working with us.”
