#20 years ago Pokito TV started on RTL2

What did the RTL2 afternoon program look like in July around 20 years ago? We take a look back into the past, when anime was an integral part of the channel.

It was a long time ago! In July 2004, the Munich free-TV station RTL2 still offered an anime program that made the hearts of many viewers, who were mainly young at the time, beat faster. The station broadcast an impressive number of anime titles that month, which were a regular part of the afternoon program. But not everything was better in the past: Like today, the summer months were often characterized by repeats. The highlights in July, however, included popular series such as “Pokémon,” “Detective Conan” and “Inuyasha,” although all of them were just repeats of older seasons.

12:20 pm: Doremi

1:45 p.m.: Pokémon

14:10: Jeanne the Kamikaze Thief

3:10 p.m.: Detective Conan

3:40 p.m.: InuYasha

A special event in July 2004 was definitely the premiere of the daily show “Pokito TV”. The first episode flickered across the screens on July 5th and marked the beginning of a new era in RTL2’s anime programming. “Pokito TV” was a magazine format that not only showed excerpts from various anime series, but also offered background information, interviews and exclusive insights into the world of anime and manga. Voice actors such as Daniel Schlauch (“Ruffy” in “One Piece”) were also invited to the Pokito studio. In the early stages, the show was hosted by Daniel Lerche.

Criticism of «Pokito TV»

However, «Pokito TV» was often criticized by “real” anime fans. Many fans complained that the format was too tailored to a young audience and did not sufficiently appreciate the complexity and cultural background of the anime. Often, topics were covered that had nothing to do with the anime universe. Despite these criticisms, «Pokito TV» made a significant contribution to promoting and expanding the anime fandom in Germany. In the following years, the show established itself as a permanent fixture in RTL2’s afternoon program and enjoyed great popularity among a wide audience. In 2008, it was converted into a live concept with interaction on the web with «My Pokito», but was discontinued at the end of 2009 due to a lack of success.

«Pokito TV» was produced by Ananas TV in Munich.
