#15 percent of straphangers can’t figure out how to wear a mask, MTA says

More than nine in 10 subway riders are wearing a mask — but a full 15 percent of them are doing it wrong, according to the MTA’s latest survey.

The survey conducted Aug. 24 to 28 found 91 percent mask usage among subway riders, the MTA said Thursday.

Coupled with the most recent survey of bus riders, which found 96 percent compliance from Aug. 10 to 20, overall mask usage on city transit is 93 percent, MTA spokesman Ken Lovett said.

But 15 percent of those mask-users are “not wearing them properly” — leaving their nose sticking out or just wearing the covering under their chin, the survey found.

“When you put on your mask, make sure you are wearing it properly, otherwise you’re putting yourself and others at risk,” Lovett said.

“We can’t say it enough: wear a damn mask.”

The survey results mark a small increase from late July and early August, when the MTA found 91 percent mask compliance.

Masks have been mandatory on all MTA trains, buses and commuter rails since mid-April. In June, the MTA found 92 percent of riders were wearing face coverings.

Even the sight of one uncovered face can send some New Yorkers rushing for the exits — New York City Transit’s Twitter feed receives multiple complaints a day from riders upset over mask-less fellow travelers.

Transit officials have warned that mask-averse straphangers could be publicly shamed and asked to leave the system, but balked at calls from unions for stricter police enforcement.

Labor leaders contend that mask non-compliance is as high as 30 percent on some bus routes.
