#You can now buy $15 bouquets of ‘organic fall leaves’

Nothing says “I’m the kind of person who waits all year for pumpkin-spice season” quite like paying for a pack of dead autumn leaves.

In San Francisco, the boutique grocer Bi-Rite is shilling bunches of “organic” red, orange and yellow leaves, wrapped in brown craft paper, for $14.95 per bunch — freshly pruned from the maple trees of McGinnis Ranch in Watsonville, California.

The small, bespoke bouquet includes about three tree stems with leaves attached that are free of pesticides thanks to their certified organic farm origins.

It’s true enough that the eye-popping displays of color-changing leaves through the fall season are becoming increasingly hard to spot due to unseasonably warm weather, which impacts the onset and duration of the color transition, according to scientists. It’s a huge tourist draw for northern states especially, and there are many regional fall foliage maps and trackers online that help chlorophyll-seekers choose the best day for finding the brightest showcase.

But for those who can’t manage a drive into the countryside to see this finite fall wonder, Bi-Rite and several other retailers, such as Etsy and DriedDecor.com, are promoting hand-plucked and carefully preserved dead leaves for your home decor amusement. And if $15 seems steep for a heap of landscaping waste, Bi-Rite assures shoppers that they’re getting only top-quality organic refuse.

“Our prices are a reflection of the quality of the food, ingredients and flowers we sell, which come from farmers and ranchers who use methods that protect the land and the people who work it,” a Bi-Rite spokesperson recently told VICE. “We want to pay these farmers who operate more responsibly a fair price to help ensure they can continue farming for decades to come.”

But, wait! There’s more foliage flimflam to come.

“As the maple season winds down, we expect to have other autumn leaves, such as oak and pistache, from Figone Ranch,” Bi-Rite said.
