#Yankees’ Zack Britton throws 18 pitches in first rehab outing

DETROIT — The Yankees are due to get Zack Britton back from the 60-day IL soon. He’s been out since undergoing elbow surgery to remove a bone chip in March.

On Saturday, Britton threw 18 pitches in the first outing of his rehab assignment for Double-A Somerset.

Britton said his elbow felt good after he had dealt with some soreness in the area of the incision following a simulated game last week.

But he also needs more work in the minors. He said his sinker doesn’t feel as sharp as he would like it to.

Aaron Boone has said the Yankees want Britton to have around five rehab outings before he rejoins the team.

Darren O’Day, on the IL with a right rotator cuff strain, is still going through a throwing program, but has not pitched off a mound yet.

Gio Urshela wasn’t in the lineup during Saturday’s 6-1 loss to the Tigers as Boone looks to “preserve” his left knee, which has been sore for much of the season.

“We want to make sure it’s not a bigger issue,’’ Boone said.

Urshela unwittingly made an impact Friday, when he walked after just three balls in the sixth inning.

After a 2-2 pitch was called a ball, Urshela trotted to first and no one noticed until after the game.

Boone said he didn’t realize the mistake until Urshela told him about it later in the game.

“Pretty wild,’’ Boone said. “Unfortunately, it’s didn’t put us over the top.”

After returning from the IL on Friday and striking out four times, Giancarlo Stanton wasn’t in the lineup Saturday. Boone said his quad was fine and Stanton was just being built up as he returned to action. Stanton is expected to be the DH on Sunday.
