#Yankees furlough around 60 player development employees

The dark days in the Yankees’ organization didn’t end after the big league club dropped three games to the Rays this week at Yankee Stadium and dropped out of first place.

Friday, according to several sources, the player development program based in Tampa lost about 60 employees who were furloughed.

When the coronavirus shut down spring training sites in March big league teams furloughed employees and eliminated jobs. However, the Yankees didn’t take those actions until Friday.

According to the Yankees 2020 media guide the player development and scouting directory listed 159 names. Add 59 minor league managers and coaches and the player development staff swelled to 218.

Without minor league seasons, the minor league complexes in Tampa and the Dominican Republic shuttered, an instructional league not scheduled yet and the probability that the Arizona Fall League won’t be played likely left too many employees for the workload.
