Saturday afternoon was a nice moment for the Yankees. Not so much for Yankees fans.

Spectators in the right field bleachers showered the warning track with trash and empty beer cans thrown in the direction of Guardians right fielder Oscar Mercado following Gleyber Torres’ walk-off hit at Yankees Stadium. One projectile even hit an umpire trying to settle the scene down.

The ugly scene resulted in Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, among other Yankees, taking a break from celebrating the 5-4 victory to try calming things down.

“Brutal,” Guardians center fielder Myles Straw told reporters. “Worst fan base on the planet.”

The tension began after Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a double to left to tie the score in the ninth inning. Left fielder Steven Kwan had gone down with an injury that he incurred while banging into the wall on the play. Straw climbed up the left field wall to confront a fan after that play.

“Obviously there’s no place for throwing stuff on the field,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters. “Obviously we certainly don’t want to put anybody in danger. Love the intensity, but can’t be throwing stuff out on the field.”

“That can’t happen,” Kiner-Falefa said. “I love the fans, love the atmosphere, but we win with class.”

Guardians manager Terry Francona also weighed on what transpired in the outfield.

“Myles was kinda sticking up for his teammate. Kid’s out there bleeding, checking him for a concussion,” Francona said, per Bally Sports Cleveland. “I just think probably emotions got a little out of control. Regardless, I don’t think people can throw stuff at our players on the field. That’s never gonna be OK.”

The scene seemed to calm down relatively quickly.

The 5-4 comeback win was the second straight for the Yankees.
