#World leaders condemn violent DC protests, call on Trump to concede

World leaders condemned supporters of President Trump after they stormed and vandalized the US Capitol Wednesday — and called on the president to concede.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the scenes in Washington, DC a disgrace and urged the US to have a peaceful transition of power.

“Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress,” Johnson tweeted. “The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.”

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven described the violent protests as “an assault on democracy.”

“President Trump and several members of Congress bear substantial responsibility for developments. The democratic election process must be respected,” Lofven tweeted.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Trump must accept American voters’ decision.

“Trump and his supporters must accept the decision of American voters at last and stop trampling on democracy,” Maas tweeted.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was concerned about the violence unfolding in Washington, DC and was monitoring the events closely.

“There is an important electoral process unfolding in the United States and I think we all want it and need it to unfold properly and peacefully,” Trudeau told the News 1130 Vancouver. “We certainly hope that things will calm down.”

In Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the riots “distressing.”

“We condemn these acts of violence and look forward to a peaceful transfer of Government to the newly elected administration in the great American democratic tradition,” Morrison wrote on Twitter.
