#Woman sues over foul odor that sickened passengers on flight

The stinky-sock smell that sickened nearly a dozen people sick and forced an airplane to make an emergency landing in 2018 has now led to a lawsuit.

Mary Vincent Randall was on Spirit Airlines flight NK779 from LaGuardia Airport to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on July 27, 2018 when it had to make an emergency stop in Myrtle Beach Airport in North Carolina because of the foul stench, according to her Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit from Tuesday.

The flight — carrying 220 passengers — was grounded early because multiple flyers complained of burning throats and chest pains and described an odor that smelled like dirty socks, NBC4 reported at the time.

The fire department could not locate the source of the smell. Still, seven to 10 passengers were brought to local hospitals after experiencing the putrid aroma, the outlet reported.

“Mary Vincent Randall, was on board flight NK779 … when a fetid, noxious, burning odor wafted through the cabin, requiring an emergency landing in Myrtle Beach International Airport where Plaintiff was taken to the hospital on an emergency basis, and caused the plaintiff to suffer extreme pain and suffering,” the court papers charge.

The Harlem woman says the airline was negligent in allowing the dangerous odor onto the flight. She also claims the airline had knowledge about unsafe conditions on its planes including on that particular flight, the court documents say.

Randall says she had to pay to receive medical care for her injuries and “Spirit Airlines, Inc. has neglected and refused to adjust or pay plaintiff’s claim.”

She is suing for unspecified damages.

The airline did not immediately return a request for comment. A lawyer for Randall did not return a request for comment.
