The victim was standing on the southbound L platform of the 14th Street-6th Avenue station in Greenwich Village at around 2:10 p.m. Monday when a man pushed her, according to police.
The shove caused her to fall to the platform, and then roll down, onto the track bed, cops said. When the woman was on the tracks, her attacker snatched her cell phone, which she dropped to the platform.
The woman was not struck by a train, and it was not immediately known if one was entering the station at the time, according to cops, who said it was unclear how precisely she got off the track bed.
The woman was rushed to NYC Health & Hospitals/Bellevue for multiple fractures to her torso, sustained during the fall.
She was listed in serious but stable condition.
Her attacker is between 40 and 50 years old, last seen wearing all dark clothing.
