A hail of bullets broke out outside an apartment complex in Tanglewilde, near Lacey in Washington State, around 7 p.m. Thursday, as four officers and Michael Forest Reinoehl exchanged gunfire, witnesses told The Olympian.
One man, who didn’t want to be identified, was out walking his dog and saw two SUVs pull up. He then heard the blast of 30 to 40 shots as he ducked behind a parked car.
Chad Smith and Chase Cutler were working on cars nearby when they saw Reinoehl get out of his car with what looked like an assault rifle.
They said they then heard 40 or 50 shots, with officers then opening fire, striking him.
“It reminded me of a video game,” Cutler said.
The officers were moving to arrest Reinoehl, the 48-year-old security guard who identified as “100% ANTIFA,” in the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Aaron “Jay” Danielson, 39, in Portland on Saturday.
Reinoehl was shot and killed by the four officers, who were working as part of the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, after emerging from an apartment armed and trying to get into a vehicle, officials said.
Another neighbor, Trevor Brown, was in his apartment when he heard eight to 10 gunshots in rapid succession. He walked outside and saw two unmarked SUVs that had pulled onto 3rd Way from opposite directions. Then, he saw a body on the street.
Witnesses said officers tried to perform CPR on the man.
A Facebook Live video posted by Jashon Spencer around 7 p.m. showed officers surrounding a white man as he lay motionless on the ground and sirens blaring in the background.
“Yeah, I think he dead for real,” Spencer says in the video. “I was sitting in my backyard and all I heard was pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. I was like, oh s–t. I come outside and there’s a million sheriffs out here and there’s a dude laying out here by the mailbox and he’s bleeding. They hit him.”
A woman also recorded the aftermath of the shooting.

“I was in the house when we heard about 20 to 25 gunshots outside the parking lot,” she said. ” I came outside with my son and found several Pierce County and Thurston County (sheriff’s deputies) along with a US Marshal with long guns.
“They had contained the scene and were performing lifesaving measures on the man who was shot but (they) had given up after about 15 minutes,” she said.
