Is there anything more satisfying than biting into a warm, soft cookie? Sometimes they don’t remain as soft the next day, especially if you store them in a moisture-sucking environment like the fridge.

However, there is a secret to storing your cookies that will keep them soft for a few days after baking—all you have to do is place a slice of white bread in the container with the cookies.

Cookies become hard and crumbly when they lose moisture, which is often caused by improper storage like leaving the cookies out in the open for too long.

When you place a slice of white bread in your airtight container with the cookies, the bread takes the hit so that the cookies remain soft.

The Food Network recommends using only white bread to avoid flavor in other slices of bread from transferring to the cookies. Don’t forget to peek at the bread every now and then to ensure it doesn’t mold in the container!

While the U.S. Department of Agriculture states that baked goods can be stored at room temperature for a few weeks, the softness of the cookies may only last up to three days.

So if you have your three simple ingredients to bake sugar cookies, grab a piece of white bread while you’re at it!
