“Why The Twilight Zone Reboot Deserves a Third Season”

It is entirely possible that The Twilight Zone changed the face of entertainment forever. It is part science fiction, fantasy, mystery, and all thought-provoking entertainment. The show first debuted in 1959 and is an anthology series, with each episode telling a self-contained story. Since the series’ inception over 60 years ago, the franchise has been in a near-constant state of growth. It has been rebooted three times — in 1985, 2022, and 2019. Along with hundreds of episodes, there is a feature film, a made-for-TV movie, and other forms of media released based on The Twilight Zone.

The most recent entry in The Twilight Zone franchise, which premiered in 2019, featured two seasons on CBS All Access (now Paramount+) before the show was canceled. Though the producers of the series have announced that the show will not be returning in the future, there are many reasons for fans of the anthology series to hope that, somehow, The Twilight Zone will return and that this is only a temporary hiatus. After all, the Jordan Peele-led CBS reboot continued a decades-long tradition of anthological insanity.

Here is why The Twilight Zone deserves to return on Paramount+ for another season.

On the Heels of Nope’s Success, Jordan Peele Knows Sci-Fi, Horror, and TwistsPeele

As mentioned, one of the creators and producers of the 2019 The Twilight Zone reboot series was Jordan Peele. The show was produced by his company Monkeypaw Productions. He also served as the show’s narrator, taking the place of Hollywood legend Rod Serling. Jordan Peele’s involvement with the series was a massive draw, as he has proven himself time and time again to be a master of putting freaky phenomena on film.

Recently, Jordan Peele’s third film, Nope, was released. On its surface, the film is an alien survival sci-fi horror film. Peele’s string of successes has led many film fans to place him among the greatest horror directors of all time, though he is reticent to accept that superlative. Regardless, everything Jordan Peele touches turns to gold, and it would be fascinating to see what he could do with a potential season three of The Twilight Zone. Especially after the world events over the last few years.

The reboot, if nothing else, accrued an absolutely staggering collection of A-list talent. The first episode of the reboot, titled “The Comedian,” features Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, Obi-Wan Kenobi) as a struggling comedian who realizes that his jokes have terrifying real-world implications. The very next episode, “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet,” stars Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, The Disaster Artist) as a harried flight passenger, and only a few episodes later, Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Nope) plays a mysterious traveler in “A Traveler.”

As such, it is easy to see how the show’s creators were able to attract so many talented individuals, and the tradition of casting excellent actors would undoubtedly continue if the series were renewed for another season.

The Twilight Zone Has Many Classic Episodes to Serve as Inspiration and Expand OnScott

2019’s The Twilight Zone was clearly a love letter to earlier installments in the franchise. One of the clearest examples of this affinity was showcased during the finale of season two, “You Might Also Like,” which contained references to the 24th episode of the original series’ third season, “To Serve Man.” In the episode, a race of giant aliens called the Kanamits land on Earth with the express purpose of aiding the human race with their advanced alien technology.

However, in a macabre twist characteristic of The Twilight Zone, it is revealed that the Kanamits didn’t appear on Earth to serve humanity’s progress as a species; they came to serve humanity for dinner. The plot of the reboot’s season two finale revolves around a group of people excited about receiving a mysterious egg, which is later revealed to be a Kanamit egg.

Given the fact that so many episodes of The Twilight Zone are cliffhangers, it would be incredibly satisfying to see some of these storylines explored in a potential third season. While the show is at its best when episodes contain a certain level of mystery, the worlds invented in the anthology series, which begin and end in the confines of a single episode, are often rich enough to spawn additional content.

2019’s The Twilight Zone had mixed reviews, and no one involved with the production has been publicly pushing for the series to be renewed for a third season. At its best, The Twilight Zone forces audiences to grapple with terrifying realities. Still, nothing could prepare fans of the series for the horrific potential that the show might never see another episode.
