#Why did women wear purple at Inauguration 2021? See the meaning

In a sea of red, white and blue, there’s a whole lot of purple.

Vice President Kamala Harris, former first lady Michelle Obama and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton donned purple, a color used traditionally as a symbol of bipartisanship — a mix of Republican red and Democratic blue — for Inauguration Day.

The color, Vanity Fair reported, also has historically symbolized nobility and was a color favored by the suffragettes, in addition to white.

The color was chosen by suffragettes in 1908, according to the National Park Service, to represent “the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity.”

Harris, 56, chose two black designers — Christopher John Rogers from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Sergio Hudson of South Carolina — for her Inauguration Day outfit. The designers have previously dressed former FLOTUS Obama as well as Beyoncé.

Violet also has an extra meaning for Harris, who reportedly used it as a nod to Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to run for president in 1972 — and often used the color purple in her campaign fliers — under the Democratic party, and the first black woman elected to US Congress, Cosmopolitan reported.

Obama, 57, also reportedly wore Sergio Hudson, but opted for a pantsuit — with a statement gold belt — instead of a dress like Harris.

Clinton, 73, also wore purple during her concession speech after losing the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump.

Melania Trump, who was seen accompany outgoing president Donald Trump, wore black as they left the White House for the last time.
