Best new HBO and HBO Max Originals: October 2020

Charm City Kings

Based on the 2013 documentary 12 O’Clock Boys, Charm City Kings is a coming-of-age story that follows a 14-year-old boy named Mouse who dreams of joining the Midnight Clique, Baltimore’s most infamous dirt-bike riding group (and which his brother was once part of). But after he’s taken under the wing of the Midnight Clique’s leader, Mouse is faced between two different paths he could take.

David Byrne’s American Utopia

A Broadway production of American Utopia (that included Talking Heads songs along with David Byrne’s 2018 album) was performed at the Hudson Theater from October 2019 to February 2020, but before the show closed, Spike Lee came in to film the performance. Like Hamilton, American Utopia is bringing the Broadway experience—something not everyone can enjoy—to subscribers’ homes.

A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote

A West Wing reunion? In this economy? Definitely—and for a good cause. Filmed over several days, the cast of The West Wing came back together (for the first time in 17 years) to perform a staged version of the season 3 episode “Hartsfield’s Landing” that will also include appearances from politicians, celebrities, and musicians.

Emma

One of Jane Austen’s most enduring works is reimagined with colorful and lavish costumes and an emphasis on its satirical roots by director Autumn de Wilde. Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) plays the scheming wealthy young woman whose intentions are in the right place while Johnny Flynn (Lovesick) plays George Knightley, Emma’s foil—and perfect match.

Galaxy Quest

The washed-out cast of a beloved sci-fi show is faced with an intergalactic mission much bigger than anything they were ever up against on TV after aliens under the impression that Galaxy Quest the TV show actually happened come to Earth asking for their help. It homages and parodies Star Trek and fan culture, but it ends up nailing down the heart of Star Trek so well that at least one Star Trek actor considers it to be the best Star Trek movie ever made.

John Lewis: Good Trouble

CNN Films’ documentary on the late congressman and civil rights activist takes viewers through John Lewis’ decades-long fight for change, both as one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s close allies and in the House of Representatives. It includes interviews from Lewis himself, many of the people who knew him, and rare archival footage.

A World of Calm

HBO Max brings ASMR videos to streaming as it pairs soothing visuals with the soothing voices of several celebrities. Among the all-star voices are Mahershala Ali, Oscar Isaac, Kate Winslet, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas, Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Lucy Liu, Keanu Reeves, Zoë Kravitz, and Cillian Murphy.

Equal

This four-part docuseries will explore the origin stories of the LGBTQ+ movement and the leaders who were pushing for change and equal rights even before Stonewall brought the fight to the forefront. Pose star Billy Porter will narrate.

The Undoing

Based on the novel You Should Have Known, Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant star as Grace and Jonathan Fraser, a married couple whose life looks perfect from the outside. But just weeks before the publication of Grace’s first book, a series of events (including a violent death and hidden revelations) threatens to upend their lives.

Raised By Wolves

Raised by Wolves‘ gradually-developed worldbuilding is a real gift compared to the many sci-fi shows that infodump at the first opportunity, or succumb to meandering mysteries like Westworld. It feels a lot like reading the first act of a really epic sci-fi novel like Dune, not least because we see some of the story through the eyes of Campion (Winta McGrath), one of the six children. —Gavia Baker-Whitelaw

The Third Day

Jude Law has chosen some pleasingly strange projects over the past few years. His last HBO collaboration The Young Pope made the most of Law’s faintly threatening sex appeal, while new offering The Third Day puts him in Average Dad Mode, descending into a nervous breakdown in a Wicker Man-like setting. Yes, I was delighted to discover that this excellent miniseries is a fully fledged folk horror story. —GBW

Lovecraft Country

Based on the book by Matt Ruff, new HBO original Lovecraft Country takes us to 1950s Jim Crow America as Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors), his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett), and Atticus’ uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) as they search for Atticus’ missing father (Michael K. Williams). But racism isn’t the only horror that awaits them and threatens their lives; monsters are on the loose, too. —Michelle Jaworski
