“What to Know About the Show’s Key Characters”

Spoiler Warning: The Boys Seasons 1-3Amazon Prime’s hit show The Boys, based upon Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic of the same name, has returned swinging for a third season with some major twists. Our team of anti-Supe vigilantes is looking for a way to permanently end Homelander’s tyranny, and the solution might just come from unexpected places.

One big addition this season is Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. Speaking to EW about season 3, showrunner Eric Kripke said:

“One of the things I love most about the world in [The Boys] comic books isn’t just how fleshed out it is, but the history of it. It goes back 60, 70 years and it’s just as fleshed out as it is today. One of the reasons that we’re getting into Soldier Boy [in season 3] and that team, Payback, is we’re interested in exploring a little bit of how we got here. Through the history of the supes, we can tell a little bit about the history of America and how we ended up in the current fraught position that we’re in. Soldier Boy gives us an opportunity to do that.”

Let’s take a look at the key players in The Boys season three.

William “Billy” Butcher

Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is the leader of the Boys. Formerly a member of the Special Air Services and the CIA, he is automatically suspicious of and distrustful toward all Supes. His training also makes him a lethal and skilled combatant in all situations. Out of all the members of the Seven, it’s Homelander he despises the most, initially believing him to be the cause of his wife’s disappearance.

The end of season two saw Billy experiencing a great loss, and in season three, he continues to assist the Boys in regulating Supes. His main goal of bringing Homelander down is now more pressing than ever before.

Marvin T. “Mother’s” Milk

A founding member of the Boys, Marvin (also known as Mother’s Milk or M.M.) is the top strategist and brains of the anti-Supe group. Portrayed by Laz Alonso, M.M. is brought into the game of superhero-focused revenge after the death of his father, a lifestyle he eventually left behind to lead a relatively normal existence with his wife and daughter. Butcher persuades him to come back and assist in bringing down the Seven, a decision that eventually strains his relationship with his family.

By the time season three rolls around, M.M. is doing his best to once again distance himself from the Boys and be a better man for his daughter, though the reappearance of Soldier Boy throws a wrench in that plan.

Hugh “Hughie” Campbell Jr.

In most respects, your average, everyday guy, Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), had his entire life uprooted when his girlfriend was killed by the speedster Supe A-Train. After this traumatic incident, a revenge-hungry Hughie finds himself caught up in Billy Butcher’s war against the Seven. He may not be as combat-capable as other members of the Boys, but his intelligence and knowledge of technology make him valuable nonetheless.

Season three has him working closely with the government to take down Supes the “right way,” though his rose-colored glasses on the state of things don’t remain on for long.

Serge Sergei / Frenchie

Under the alias of Frenchie, Serge Sergei (Tomer Kapon) first joined up with the Boys when his knowledge of weapons and gadgetry — used to commit heists and escape the scene of the crime before pursuing Supes could take him down — caught the eye of one Grace Mallory, a founding member of the titular vigilante group. Despite his criminal background and rough upbringing, Frenchie is a man who cares deeply for the people around him and feels guilt for every life he’s taken, purposefully or not.

He develops a strong relationship with one Kimiko Miyashiro (or The Female), his presence proving something of a balming effect against her paranoia and violent outbursts.

Kimiko Miyashiro / The Female

Rescued from a cage by the Boys while they’re on a mission, Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara) is a powerful woman with a tragic background. Forced into a terrorist organization with her brother after the death of their parents, she was eventually kidnapped and brought to the USA for experimentation with the super serum Compound V. These experiments gave her inhuman strength, enough to rip a man to shreds with her bare hands, while one traumatizing experience after another has made her slow to trust and quick to fight. They also left her with an inability to speak, meaning she uses sign language to communicate.

It’s mostly Frenchie’s trust in her that allows Kimiko to calm down and integrate with the rest of the Boys, and by season three, she is working as an assassin. However, her powers seem to be having trouble functioning as they once did.

John Vought / Homelander

Known to the public by his alias Homelander, John Vought (Antony Starr) is the leader of the Seven, the world’s premier group of the strongest Supes. He can fly, see through walls, has super strength and super hearing, and can shoot laser beams from his eyes. He’s the picture-perfect, textbook definition of a superhero, but his persona is all surface level. Though he puts on a convincing act of charisma and empathy for the public, underneath all that, Homelander is a malicious, sadistic individual with no regard for the safety of others.

Throughout his years as a superhero, he has committed many heinous, inhumane acts which come around later to bite him. However, in season three, he’s been able to regain public favor after Stormfront’s death. Now, he’s even more out of control than before.

Annie January / Starlight

Raised in the Midwest, Annie January (Erin Moriarity) was as idealistic and bright-eyed as they came when she moved to New York City to save lives with the Seven. The reality of her situation and the true nature of her colleagues quickly becomes apparent to her, and she starts working secretly with the Boys to take the Seven down from the inside.

Known by her superhero alias Starlight, she is genuinely invested in improving the lives of others and using her gifts for good. Her powers reflect that good nature, with the ability to harness light, glowing, and shooting beams from her hands. Over the course of the series, she and Hughie strike up a steady romantic relationship.

Maggie Shaw / Queen Maeve

Unlike Starlight, Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) let the desires of Homelander cloud her judgment, giving up a lot of herself to become what the leader of the Seven wanted. Although she initially works against the Boys, guilt and reflection on her past actions eventually turn her into an antihero, as she teams up with the vigilantes to take down the season two antagonist Stormfront.

In terms of powers, Queen Maeve is essentially a Jane-of-all-trades, with enhanced strength, speed, senses, durability, and reflexes. By season three, she seems to have turned a new leaf and is working to help the Boys take down Homelander.

Soldier Boy

America’s first and greatest superhero, Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) helped defeat Nazi Germany in WWII. He was the former leader of the superhero team Payback until their botched mission in Nicaragua led to his supposed death. However, he’s returned in the flesh for season three as an all-new adversary for the Boys to hunt down.

His powers include superhuman strength and, apparently, slow aging, similar to season two antagonist Stormfront. And now, after years of being assumed KIA, he’s developed a new power of the nuclear type, one which might be the key to permanently defeating Homelander.
