The film, written and directed by Benny Safdie, will be released on October 3.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is best known as a blockbuster star, but he’s also shined in all-too-rare offbeat dramatic roles. If you haven’t seen him as the action hero who lost his memory in Southland Tales, or the roided-out wannabe criminal in Pain & Gain, check those out immediately. Happily, his next project isn’t another Fast & Furious or Jumanji movie: it’s a biopic of the UFC fighter Mark Kerr called The Smashing Machine, written and directed for A24 by Benny Safdie (co-writer and director of Uncut Gems and Good Time).
The film is based on a 2002 documentary of the same name which chronicled Kerr’s ascent in the UFC in the early 90s and his struggles with addiction. The trailer showcases those arcs in broad strokes, with Emily Blunt co-starring as Kerr’s partner Dawn Staples. You might not recognize The Rock at first — he’s got some seriously impressive prosthetic work going on, another box checked on his way to a possible Oscar nomination, which this film definitely feels like his play for.
The Smashing Machine is out on October 3. Watch the trailer above.
