#Warden quits NYC prison where Jeffrey Epstein died

A warden brought in to clean up the embattled Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan — the jail where convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein died — abruptly resigned this week.

Marti Licon-Vitale, 54, suddenly quit after an 18-month tenure that was plagued with the spread of COVID-19 among inmates, accusations of inhumane living conditions and the smuggling of narcotics and a gun.

The Bureau of Prisons says Licon-Vitale is retiring and that a new interim warden, Eric Williams, has been assigned until the agency finds a permanent replacement one.

Williams, who has been a warden at a medium-security prison in Illinois since March, will be the fourth warden in charge of the MCC since Epstein’s death, the agency said.

Licon-Vitale arrived at MCC last January after serving as the head of the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut.

She took over for an interim warden who replaced Lamine N’Diaye, the warden who was in charge at the time of Epstein’s suicide in August 2019. N’Diaye was later transferred to another job in the agency.

Epstein’s death remains under investigation by the Justice Department. Two correctional officers responsible for watching after him have been charged with not checking up on the disgraced financier and are awaiting trial.
