#Wandering Witch Creator Further Explains His “No Underwear” Rule Given to Anime Staff

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina

Crunchyroll News reported back in early October that Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina creator Jougi Shiraishi had told Web Newtype in an interview that he had asked the anime staff at C2C to “please don't show any underwear”. Shiraishi expanded on these comments in an interview with Anime Tourism website Mipon today, explaining that he wanted the TV anime series “to look and feel as natural as possible.”

Mipon commented in the interview that the response in Web Newtype had fans overseas “quite amused". Shiraishi responding to Mipon that he’d “noticed the comment caused quite a reaction.” He further explained that while he does “like panty flashes, and such … I feel that if you make the decision to include things like that, you inevitably end up limiting your audience, often to a subset of the male demographic.”

Shiraishi delves deeper into his feelings on the matter in his response, saying he “had always aimed Wandering Witch at a very broad audience as opposed to focusing on a certain group of viewers.”

The rest of the interview goes into interesting topics such as why the anime decided not to adapt certain chapters that focused more on the darker side of Elaina, what the future may hold for Elaina’s love life, and Shiraishi’s thoughts on the light novel industry (and by extension the anime industry) on a whole. You can check out the rest of the interview over in English on Mipon.

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina started airing in Japan on October 2 with Funimation and their affiliate companies streaming the series.
