Remember when Volkswagen got caught cheating emissions tests in 2015? It spent the following years trying to shake its polluted reputation, and it found a lot of success with the the ID BUZZ concept EV, a 2017 revision of the classic Microbus. Now, years later, we’re finally getting a real Microbus EV.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess says that the VW Microbus EV will debut on March 9th, 2022. He also shared a short animated video of the car’s official design, which differs a bit from the original Microbus or the ID BUZZ concept.

Unlike the original Microbus, which has a flat face that’s inspired by city buses, the Microbus EV looks a bit more like a van. It has a curvier, more aerodynamic front-end to improve range and performance. The batteries hide under the floor, of course, and like VW’s ID 3 hatchback and ID 4 crossover SUV, the Microbus EV will use Volkswagen’s MEB vehicle platform.

Still, we don’t know much about this vehicle. Its range, pricing, and features won’t be revealed by VW until March 9th at the earliest. (Unfortunately, the car’s name is also a mystery—I really hope that VW just calls it the “Microbus EV” and ditches the ID BUZZ thing.)

Volkswagen recently stated that the Microbus EV won’t reach consumers until 2023, so now’s the time to start dumping cash into your savings account. Don’t be surprised if the EV gets delayed, though. We’re in the midst of a global chip shortage that’s really screwing up the auto industry.
