#Vivien Goldman Returns With First New Song in Years This Week

Vivien Goldman—the post-punk musician who’s also a music journalist, reggae scholar, and “Professor of Punk” at NYU—hasn’t released a new song as a solo artist in decades. With Election Day approaching, Goldman is breaking that silence. “I Have a Voice” is out this Friday (October 30) via Youth Sounds/Cadiz Music.

Goldman’s “I Have a Voice” features contributions from keyboardist/producer Toby Andersen and producer Youth. The song will be released digitally and as part of a 12″ vinyl single that includes alternate mixes and dubs. The track also serves as a preview for Goldman’s 2021 album Next Is Now.

“I wrote this song in 2019, in London,” Goldman said in a statement. “Then as now, people were arguing about Brexit and Trump and the existential sense of uncertainty was much more intense than when punks sang No Future in the 1970s. Many obstacles are being put in the way of people voting in America now, but we must keep our energy and persistence up to make the change we need. We have a voice.”

Goldman released her new book Revenge of the She-Punks last year. A compilation of her early work Resolutionary (Songs 1979-1982) arrived in 2016. Read Pitchfork’s feature “No One’s More Punk than Vivien Goldman.”
