Violet Evergarden: The Movie and Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! have won the Anime of the Year award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2021. Violet Evergarden and Eizouken! claimed the prize for the movie and TV categories respectively.
Meanwhile, IDOLiSH7 Second BEAT! won the hearts of fans and took home the TAAF 2021 fan award.
For the individual awards, Reiko Yoshida (Violet Evergarden: The Movie) snagged the award for best original work/screenplay, while Haruo Sotozaki (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train) won the award for best director/episode director.
Akira Matsushima (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train) won in the animator category, while the late Mikiko Watanabe (Violet Evergarden: The Movie) won the prize for the background, color, and image category for the second year in a row. The former category covers roles like character designer, mecha designer, and chief animation director, while the latter covers roles like art director, photography director, and editor.
Finally, Yuki Kajiura was the winner of the sound and performance category.
TAAF began in 2002 as part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair, where it was called the Tokyo Anime Award. TAAF became independent in 2014. In TAAF 2020, Weathering with You and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba were the respective movie and TV category winners of the Anime of the Year award.
