The Olympic gold medalist sprinter — who announced Monday on Instagram that he was quarantining until he got his test results – has been officially informed of his diagnosis, The Gleaner of Jamaica reported.
The retired athlete, who reported no symptoms, tested positive just days after he celebrated his 34th birthday in a surprise party in his country.
“I’m just waking up, and like everybody else I checked social media, [which] is saying I am confirmed to have COVID-19,” Bolt said in a video before finding out about his infection. “I am trying to be responsible, so I am going to stay in and stay here for my friends.”
Jamaican Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton later announced that Bolt was informed that he has COVID-19.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Bolt’s birthday bash in St. Andrew last week, The Gleaner reported.
Videos posted on social media showed Bolt and other partygoers without masks.
“These matters are all being thoroughly investigated and the police will give a report on these matters in near future,” Holness said.
Bolt last competed internationally at the 2017 World Championships in London.
In May, he and partner Kasi Bennet welcomed the birth of a daughter.
