The US recorded fewer than 50,000 new coronavirus infections for the third day in a row — marking the longest streak below that threshold in more than a month, new data shows.

The case count Tuesday was 46,800, following 49,500 Monday and 47,000 cases on Sunday, according to a running tally from Johns Hopkins University.

The last time the nation saw the case count dip below the 50,000 threshold for that long was from July 4 to July 6.

Though the US has seen more than 5 million cases, the number of new cases has fallen over the past three weeks.

The decline has been attributed to fewer new cases in hotspots such as Arizona, Florida, California and Tennessee.

Coronavirus-related fatalities were also down last week, seeing a 16 percent drop from the previous seven-day period, according to a Reuters tally.
