A swath of Louisiana Highway 1 closed as floodwater covered the road, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office posted to Facebook late Wednesday morning.
Photos posted by the sheriff’s office show the waters nearly burying a car and rising up on road signs and businesses.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center warned of Hurricane Laura’s devastating potential.
“Unsurvivable storm surge with large and destructive waves will cause catastrophic damage from Sea Rim State Park, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana, including Calcasieu and Sabine Lakes,” the tweet said.

“This surge could penetrate up to 30 miles inland from the immediate coastline.”
The storm is expected to strike upper Texas or southwest Louisiana coast as a major hurricane by late Wednesday or early Thursday.
Currently a Category 3, Hurricane Laura is continuing to rapidly strengthen and “is expected to become an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane,” predictions indicate.
