#Ufotable President Faces Potential Prison Sentence of 1 Year and 8 Months

Hikaru Kondo, the founder, representative director, and president of Ufotable, is facing a potential prison sentence of 1 year and 8 months over three years of tax evasion.

Kondo is accused of violating the Corporation Tax Act, with Ufotable allegedly owing 138 million yen (US$1.2 million) in tax. The company faces a 40 million yen (US$350k) fine.

According to TBS, the prosecution said that Kondo would insist on fraudulent accounting when large profits were made, and that the cover-up was “thorough and ingenious.”

Livedoor reported that the defense pleaded for a suspended sentence for Kondo, saying that Kondo had not utilized the money for personal use.

Kondo, who was indicted in July, said that he was “extremely sorry.” He also added that he had “caused trouble for a lot of people” and that all he can do is to make it up to everyone.

The final verdict will be held on December 10.

Kondo founded Ufotable in 2000. The company is perhaps best known for producing the highly popular anime adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga series, as well as the adaptations of the Fate/Stay Night visual novel’s Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven’s Feel routes.
