Michael Lombardi of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the Jaguars are fielding multiple offers for the disgruntled defensive end and a deal could be imminent.
“According to NFL sources, Jacksonville is extremely close to trading Yannick Ngakoue today or tomorrow, have a firm offer in place–(hearing a two),” he wrote on Twitter. “Looks like this holdout will be over soon and Jacksonville will get more picks for their tanking….”
The Eagles and Raiders have both been linked to Ngakoue this offseason.
The franchise-tagged 25-year-old began requesting a trade via social media back in March and has reiterated his desire to leave while taking numerous shots at the team.
“The Jaguars are aware I no longer have interest in signing a long-term contract in Jacksonville,” he wrote in March. “Duval, I love you and gave you guys everything I got. I’m thankful for the journey and look forward to continuing my career elsewhere.”
Ngakoue was Jacksonville’s 2016 third-round pick from Maryland and has 122 tackles, 37.5 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and two interceptions over four seasons and has one Pro Bowl nomination. Since joining the team, however, the Jaguars have struggled significantly, finishing in last place in the AFC South in three of four seasons.
“I really want to be part of a team that has great culture and winning is a habit,” he said on ESPN in April. “I don’t want to be part of a team that losing is a norm or anything of that nature.
“I’m a top-five defensive end in this league — top-three — my play hasn’t been able to be seen like that playing in Jacksonville — not having too many prime-time games. So, if I ended up landing on a team that’s prime-time, hopefully, I can show the world what I can do.”
Jacksonville applied the franchise tag on Ngakoue in March worth $19.3 million. It was reported previously that a number of teams were interested in trading for the 6-foot-2, 246-pound edge rusher, but the Jaguars have been patient at least until this point.
