#Two Chicago cops ‘seriously hurt’ in shooting

One Chicago cop was killed and another seriously injured during a traffic stop that turned deadly on Saturday night, authorities said.

“This evening, Chicago mourns the loss of one of its bravest and finest and we have another officer who is struggling and fighting for his very life,” Carter said.

The officers had pulled over a vehicle on 63rd and Bell Avenue in the Wet Englewood neighborhood at about 9 p.m. when one of the three passengers opened fire, First Deputy Superintendent Eric Carter said during a news briefing.

The cops shot back, hitting one of the passengers, according to Carter.

Both officers were taken to Chicago Hospital, with a female officer dying from her wounds. A male officer was still hospitalized, according to officials. Neither was identified.

The status of the passenger who was shot wasn’t disclosed, but police said the other two passengers were in custody and a gun was recovered from the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and further details would be shared Sunday, officials said.

“It’s just another example of how the Chicago Police Department and these officers put their lives above that of others to protect this city day in, day out,” Carter said.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot offered condolences to the family of the slain officer, who she described as “very young on the job but incredibly enthusiastic to do the work.”

“We must remind ourselves every single day our officers are fearless in the face of danger,” she said. “They run to danger to protect us – we can never forget that.”
