#Twitter users hail rollout of new edit button

“Twitter users hail rollout of new edit button”

Twitter on Thursday rolled out a long-hoped for feature — an edit button — igniting widespread celebrations online from users who have been calling for the button for years.

The social media platform posted a blog item announcing the button is being tested internally and the feature would be offered initially to users of its paid Twitter Blue subscription service in the next few weeks.

“If you see an edited Tweet it’s because we’re testing the edit button…this is happening and you’ll be okay,” the company wrote.

“Tweets will be able to be edited a few times in the 30 minutes following their publication,” it continued.

“Edited Tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp, and label so it’s clear to readers that the original Tweet has been modified.”

The company said that readers will also be able to see past versions of tweets.

In April, Twitter announced that it had been testing an edit button for about a year. The announcement came on the same day the company said it was adding Tesla CEO Elon Musk to its board of directors.

Musk, the world’s richest person, pulled out of the board soon after and announced he was buying Twitter outright for $44 billion.

“I just checked to see if it was April 1. I can’t believe this is really happening!!!” Eliza Orlins tweeted.

One Twitter account quipped: “Does it work only on tweets or also on deals with Elon Musk?”

Others, however, weren’t too thrilled over the idea. Keith Olbermann, the former ESPN and MSNBC host, tweeted: “Most dangerous thing you could do. Think what politicians and fascists could do with it.”

The Twitter account for the Morning Brew news site had fun with the announcement, tweeting: “Twitter announced this morning that they’re testing an edit button and users may start to see edited tweets. Who even wants an edir button?”

Musk is currently in court attempting to get out of a deal to acquire Twitter.

Last month, Peiter Zatko, a former head of security at Twitter, came forward and alleged that the company failed to plug holes in its cybersecurity apparatus.

Musk has cited Zatko’s claims to support his contention that Twitter concealed information about its company operations during the negotiations and that he should thus be allowed to terminate the acquisition agreement.

The trial in Delaware Chancery court is scheduled for next month.
