#MAnime Recommends: «My Dress-Up Darling»

“MAnime Recommends: «My Dress-Up Darling»

A real hype broke out about the series “My Dress-Up Darling” when it was released. But what makes the anime so worth seeing?

The anime adaptation “My Dress-Up Darling”, which is based on the manga “More Than a Doll” by Shinichi Fukuda, celebrated its premiere in early 2022. The studio’s production CloverWorks was able to quickly build up a considerable fan base – the female protagonist Marin in particular enjoys great popularity among male audiences. For a few weeks now, the German dubbed version of the series has also been submitted. I used this opportunity to get my own impression of the anime – you can find my conclusion below!

Plot of «My Dress-Up Darling»:

Wakana’s wish is to grow up to be a kishirashi like his grandpa – a master maker of traditional Japanese hina dolls. Although enthusiastic about the craft, he doesn’t know the faintest thing about the latest fashion trends and finds it difficult to contribute to his class. His popular classmates, above all the girl Marin, seem to live in a completely different world. That changes one day when she tells him about her secret hobby of cosplay and their completely different worlds collide.

My opinion on the anime:

If you look at «My Dress-Up Darling», you will quickly understand why the anime is so popular. Several factors play a role here. On the one hand there is of course the main character Marin, whose character design is a real feast for the eyes. Paired with a few ecchi scenes, which have been skilfully built into the plot, there is bound to be a promising combination. But the anime can also score with other characteristics apart from the “Ecchi factor”: While one could guess at first that Marin has an imaginary personality due to her stylish appearance, she has a very honest and warm character. The male protagonist Wakana and the other characters who come along later are also quickly taken to heart. The unfolding love between Marin and Wakana also ensures pleasant, but also funny moments.

This gives «My Dress-Up Darling» the look of a feel-good series, which also fits in with the message of the work. The focus on cosplay conveys that you should stand by your dreams and interests and slip into the role of all your favorite characters. Since cosplaying is also firmly connected to the world of anime and manga in Germany, many people in Germany will also be able to get enthusiastic about the subject of anime.

The German dubbing also deserves special praise at this point, which in my opinion is worth a rewatch even for dub muffles! The dialogue book written by Charlotte Uhlig is very funny and creative. Particular attention was paid to the authentic use of terms from young people’s language (“nice”, “geilo”), which gives the whole thing a particularly fresh and relaxed look.
