Amazin' But True Episode 18 Mets podcast

The Mets picked up back-to-back wins against the Nationals to work out a split of the four-game set at Citi Field this week. Unfortunately, they lost Jeff McNeil in the process. On the latest episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with Nelson Figueroa and I, we talk about everything going on in Mets land.

Figgie and I open up the show talking about Jeff McNeil’s knee injury and when we could expect him back. We then react to the “Tomas Nido Game,” after he belted two home runs, including a grand slam, driving in six, leading the Mets to an 8-2 victory Thursday. Did anyone on the planet ever see that coming from the Mets’ light-hitting backup catcher? We also get into some decisions ahead for Luis Rojas with the lineup. How will he get Robinson Cano in along with J.D. Davis, Amed Rosario, Andres Gimenez and Dom Smith? We also talk about what has changed with Pete Alonso as his bat is hot now and he approaches batting his weight at .240. We look ahead to the weekend series against the Phillies and then give our thoughts on Marcus Stroman’s surprising decision to opt out of the season.

1986 World Series champion, Mets legend and friend of the program Dwight “Doc” Gooden then joins us. Doc talks about the state of the Mets’ starting pitching staff right now and Steven Matz’s inconsistency. He then gives us his honest take on the opt outs from Stroman and Yoenis Cespedes. He believes Stroman did it because he didn’t want to get hurt and not for COVID-related reasons and calls Cespedes’ decision a “weak move.” He then responds to me asking about the potential ownership change coming and why it could be a good thing for the franchise, although he has always liked the Wilpons. Gooden then discusses the job Brodie Van Wagenen has done as GM and why he should get another chance next season. Doc then explains why the Mets might have to consider trading Jacob deGrom after this season. He closes by telling us he believes the Mets could make a move for Johnny Cueto before the trade deadline. Doc is an incredibly candid interview and he had a lot of fantastic stuff to say.
