President Trump on Monday honed his reelection pitch for Latinos, saying Democrat Joe Biden would reduce safety and economic opportunity — turning their American dream into an “American nightmare.”

“I’ve achieved more for Hispanic Americans in 47 months than Joe Biden achieved in 47 years. They don’t call him Sleepy Joe for nothing,” Trump told a packed hotel ballroom audience in Phoenix, Arizona.

“My Latinos. I love the Latinos. But I’ve always known how great you were,” Trump said during an 80-minute roundtable of businesspeople and officials that at points resembled a campaign rally.

Trump said Biden would end the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic and invoked increases in violent crime in major cities following the May killing of George Floyd by Minnesota police.

“Have you seen his peaceful protesters?” Trump said. “They’ll rip down your community. Many of these are Hispanic American small businesses.”

“Many Hispanic Americans came here to pursue the American dream, right?” Trump said.

“We want the American dream. Having left countries that did not have safe streets — many of you, or your family, Your mothers, your fathers, they left countries that were very very bad, very bad, a lot of problems. And if we let this go on, you’d have that.”

The largely unmasked crowd sat closely together and chanted, “USA! USA! USA!”

Democrat Hillary Clinton took two-thirds of the Hispanic vote in 2016 against Trump, who ran on a pledge to build a US-Mexico border wall. But some recent polls show Trump dramatically improving his standing, particularly in Florida.

Trump’s outreach in Arizona comes as polls show him down to Biden in the state, which Trump won by against Clinton by 3.5 percentage points.

“It is getting a lot easier to be Republican for, as you say, minorities. It’s getting a lot easier whether you’re Hispanic or anything else,” Trump said. “It’s a beautiful thing to see what’s happening with the Republican Party.”

Trump told the crowd that Biden “will surrender your entire country to the radical left” and “some of you came from parts of the world where it’s socialist or worse. You know, it’s called the C word, right?”

Trump highlighted economic statistics from before COVID-19 struck in March.

“Before the China virus came in we achieved the lowest Hispanic American unemployment rate ever,” Trump said. “Over 600,000 Hispanic Americans were lifted out of poverty in that short period of time. That’s a record.”

Amid the recovery, “we had a 3.3 million jobs for Hispanic Americans in the last four months — it’s a record. So we’re coming back very very strong,” he said.

Trump, who traveled from Nevada to California earlier in the day for a wildfire briefing before flying to Arizona, ridiculed Biden’s stamina.

“You need a lot of a lot of energy to do this job properly. You can’t be sitting in your basement for four days,” he said. “I like Delaware. I think Delaware is a good place, but you gotta leave it on occasion.”
