#Trump issues order banning US companies from transacting with TikTok parent company

August 6, 2020 | 10:42pm

President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order banning transactions beginning in 45 days between US companies and the Chinese parent company of social media app TikTok.

The app may be used for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party and the United States “must take aggressive action against the owners of TikTok to protect our national security,” Trump said in the order

Trump earlier this week vowed to ban the wildly popular video-sharing app if Beijing-based tech company ByteDance fails to reach a deal with Microsoft or another US company by Sept. 15. The president’s order goes into effect Sept. 20 and says any American company who violates it could face sanctions.

Also on Thursday, Trump issued another order with the same time frame banning US company dealings with another Chinese owned social media app, WeChat.

WeChat and its sister app Weixin in China are widely-used messaging apps.
