“Liz Cheney is only upset because I have been actively getting our great and beautiful Country out of the ridiculous and costly Endless Wars. I am also making our so-called allies pay tens of billions of dollars in delinquent military costs,” Trump posted on Twitter Thursday. “They must, at least, treat us fairly!!!”
For emphasis, Trump then retweeted Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Matt Gaetz, who publicly called for Cheney’s ouster as No. 3 in House Republican leadership.
“I’m fighting for President @realDonaldTrump’s #AmericaFirst vision for the Republican party,” Gaetz (R-Fla.) wrote in his tweet.
Paul (R-Ky.) accused Cheney of trying to thwart the president’s efforts in Afghanistan.
“We should all join @realDonaldTrump in advocating to stop our endless wars. Liz Cheney not only wants to stay forever, she’s leading the fight to try to stop him from leaving. Unacceptable,” Paul’s tweet said.
The House Armed Services Committee at the beginning of the month passed an amendment to the defense spending bill that would place roadblocks on Trump’s plans to remove troops from Afghanistan.
Cheney, a member of the committee, co-sponsored it with Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.).
The amendment said before the number of troops can be cut below 8,000 the Pentagon must certify that removing them “is in the best interest of the United States national security” and “will not increase the risk for the expansion of existing or formation of new terrorist safe havens inside Afghanistan.”
Gaetz was among a group of bipartisan lawmakers who sought to defeat the amendment.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was accused of backing a primary candidate against an incumbent Republican and breaking with the president on his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
“Liz Cheney has worked behind the scenes (and now in public) against @realDonaldTrump and his agenda,” he tweeted on Tuesday.
“House Republicans deserve better as our Conference Chair. Liz Cheney should step down or be removed #MAGA,” he continued.
