Tory Lanez began to face trial on Monday (December 12) on charges that the rapper shot Megan Thee Stallion in the foot outside of a party in Los Angeles last July. He has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts and faces over 20 years in prison if convicted.

During opening statements reported by Rolling Stone, Deputy District Attorney Alexander Bott told jurors that Megan’s former friend Kelsey Harris would testify that she saw Lanez shoot Megan. “Kelsey will tell you that she just saw her close friend get shot by the defendant,” Bott said, adding that Harris will reportedly testify that Lanez physically assaulted her after the shooting.

The prosecution outlined the testimony and correspondence it would use to connect Lanez to the shooting. In one text message, Lanez apologized “from the bottom of my heart” without specifically referencing the shooting. Lanez’s attorneys claim that the message was taken “out of context,” according to the Los Angeles Times.

Displayed for the jury were text messages purportedly sent by Harris to Justin Edison, Megan’s bodyguard, minutes after the shooting, reading “Help,” “Tory Shot Meg,” and “911.” The prosecution will call Edison to the stand; he claims that while Lanez admitted to him the following day that he had fired the weapon, he maintained that he had not been aiming at Megan.

Tory Lanez faces three felony charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence, a charge which was added to the case last week.
